Introduction

The atmosphere has no borders. Acidic pollutants are carried over long distances by air currents, and acid deposition can sometimes be observed in places thousands of miles from the point of origin.

As advances are made in scientific studies on acid deposition, it becomes more important to consider far-reaching effects of pollutants and to collaborate at the regional and global levels in order to implement effective countermeasures.

This lesson looks at international arrangements such as treaties on acid deposition, and international initiatives in Europe, North America, and East Asia. This lesson focuses especially on East Asia, although it begins with examples from the other regions.
